Companions in Christ

As I think about pastoral care, it occurs to me that what we are doing is being companions to people who are sick or shut-in. The idea is that no one should be alone in suffering, unless he or she wants to keep the situation private.

Indeed, we are never alone! Nothing ever separates us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:3).  But, sometimes, a person needs to have God “with skin on” That’s when your pastoral care team comes in. It’s clergy and lay members visit people in their homes, in nursing homes, hospitals or anywhere they are sick.

Companioning with others in times of need is an important ministry in our congregation. Perhaps, you are interested in this ministry, but don’t feel led to visit in hospitals etc. However, there is an important part you can play. It is Telephone Ministry. Telephone Companions are people who agree to contact sick or shut-in folks on a weekly basis. They are given names and phone numbers of a few people by Georgi or myself. We will suggest that you call during the daytime or evening to ask: “How are things with you? Is there anything that the Church can do for you?”

Other suggested questions are:

· “Would you like a visit by one of the clergy?”

· “Would you like someone to bring you communion?"

· “Would you like to have prayers said for you in Church or have your name on the Prayer Chain?”

This is a very important ministry and a powerful witness to the love of Christ. If you are interested in being a Telephone Companion, please contact Georgi or myself.
